Braces Survival Kit: 5 Must-Have Tools If You Have Braces

From slightly misaligned teeth to severely rotated ones, metal braces can address all kinds of orthodontic issues. While keeping your smile happy and healthy will require a bit more work, your oral hygiene routine will be much less cumbersome with the right tools. Keep reading for five must-haves!

#1. An Interproximal Brush

A soft-bristled toothbrush is certainly a must, but do you have an interproximal brush? This compact, effective tool can remove food particles, plaque, and debris around your braces and between the wires. It’s so handy, in fact, that many patients continue using it even after their time with braces is up!

#2. A Good Floss

There is no denying the importance of flossing. After all, brushing alone only cleans about 60% of the surface of your teeth. Since the brackets and wires require you to adjust your oral hygiene routine, it’s important to find a floss that makes this task easier. Pre-threaded floss and a water flosser are some patient favorites (just make sure to talk to your orthodontist beforehand to ensure you’re using these tools correctly).

#3. A Small Mirror

Braces can harbor food particles, bacteria, and plaque, which is why implementing a solid oral hygiene routine is so important. To make sure there is no lingering debris in your brackets and wires afterward, keep a small mirror on hand to double-check. If needed, gently brush your teeth and braces once more.

#4. Travel-Sized Toothpaste

Keeping your teeth decay-free throughout your orthodontic treatment is essential and brushing after each meal is an important part of achieving that goal. Since carrying around a full-sized toothpaste is a bit unrealistic, especially on-the-go, get a few travel-sized ones. That way, you can effectively clean your teeth whether you’re at work or out for lunch with a friend!

#5. Dental Wax

With dental wax, you can effectively protect the soft tissue in your mouth from sharp brackets and wires. Plus, it’s super easy to use! All you have to do is pinch off a small piece, roll it into a ball, and place it over the problematic edge.

Braces are a tried-and-true treatment for misaligned teeth and unhealthy bites. And with the right tools in your arsenal, you can ensure your smile stays happy and healthy throughout the process!
